Molix WTD 110. Studio shot in a fish tank on Flickr. These aquarium or fish tank shots are becoming a sort of trademark of my work within the fishing tackle industry. I learnt how to make them through Flickr, in fact one day I found the photos of a guy that was shooting old wooden lures in a plastic bowl and the result impressed me.
I had a small fish tank built for me and started playing with the lights and the lures splashing. I did my first attempts with a white background, way easier to handle, and then switched to a black background, more tricky yet with a better outcome. The problem is not the shot itself but the post production work that it takes to achieve a clean result, in fact, as you can imagine, bubbles and reflections – desired or not – are the by catch of such shots.
For this kind of photos I use quite a simple set up. Here we have two lights, one is on camera right higher than the lure at a 45º angle and the other one is on camera left more or less at the same height as the lure. The higher speedlight goes through a Honlphoto Grid, for a better control of the light, while the other flash as bare or sometimes with a small softbox, like Lumiquest Softbox III.

Un fin de semana pescando en el Estrecho de Gibraltar

Castilla la Mancha, Spain. Looks like gold but it isn’t…a former weath field, all combed and a bird flying over it. on Flickr.A kind of minimalistic shot, there’s nothing more than lines here and, if you look carefully, a bird flying across. What caught my attention was the absolute “absence” of any thing that could somehow distract from the peaceful forms, curves, lines and gold color. The bird is a just breath of life

Flowers and a wooden weel hanging from the wall of a restaurant in Patones, near Madrid. Spain on Flickr.Quite a colorful shot, without much saturation to be honest. This is the decoration of a nice restaurant in a small village near madrid, the light was quite nice, near ssunset, and I thought it would make for a nice image

Costa Rica, Fisherman with a Broomtail Grouper (Mycteroperca xenarcha) lit with an SB800 off camera flash and edited in black and white on Flickr. This is one of the few valuable fish we caught during our trip to Costa Rica this spring. Is a beautiful Grouper, and an excellent game fish. I took this photo with the D90 and the Tokina 11-16 f2.8, using an SB800 through a Lumiquest Softbox III as off camera light. Even though the original image has a beautiful blue sky, I prefer the B&W conversion because the animal doesn’t have an interesting color at all.

Dubai, large yacht moored at the dock with the city behind it. Fake HDR, 3 exposures +2 and - 2ev on Flickr. This image has been sitting there for a couple of years now and when I saw it yesterday I thought it was sure worth a try. I edited in Lightroom and couldn’t get where I wanted so I made a couple of virtual copies, at +2 and - 2ev and tone mapped them in Photomatix. I wanted details and contrast, and eventually I managed to get them. In my humble opinion is quite a well balanced image, with a lot of interesting elements to keep your eyes scanning it for a while.

La Pinilla, Spain. The storm has passed by and is now leaving, the rainbox follows… on Flickr. Is only a matter of light and colors…
The storm is now far away, I can leave the car, set my tripod and start making picures. The beauty of the spanish countryside is all over the place, and the smell, after the rain, intensified.
Taking pictures is a great hobby that takes you to some beautiful places.

Molix Vario Crank. Studio shot with one SB800 through the OrbisFlash as main light and another SB800 through a Lastolite EzyBox on Flickr.Today I had to make some photos for a trade magazine and set up my studio. When I was done with what I had to do, I picked up a couple of lures and took some shots. I already have some images of theis Vario Crankbait, but I thought that these colors would be pretty cool to photograph. I have a cool full body image and then this close up.
Is quite amazing to see the amount of details still available even at f16; the Tokina 100mm f2.8 AT-X Macro is avery nice lens. Camara Nikon D7000
The Orbis Flash light is being supported by the other SB800 through a Lastolite EzyBox, a very good companion for these kind of works. Both speedlights have been triggered by the Nikon CLS

Castilla León, Spain. Straw bales, left in the field. Stormy sky with the sun shining. Black & white shot with Nikon D7000 and Nikkor 18-70 f 3.5-4.5 on Flickr.Yesterday I had an oportunity for some fantastic shots, because the elements had gathered together as in a perfect plan. Stormy sky yet the sun was already low and could make it through the cover. Long appealing shadows and amazing colors. Thus, I’m not sure I was able to find the best subjects to take advantage of such opportunity. Anyway, here’s one of the shots, no colors for this one, I played more with the light and contrast. I took this image with the D7000 and the old Nikkor 18-70, a lens that might now offer not enough resolution for such powerful camera

Bijagos islands, Guinea Bissau. The boats ready to leave for the day’s fishing on Flickr. For this shot I had to be in the water with the camera, something I’m more and more afraid to do nowdays… Anyway, the sun was coming up fast, as it happens in the tropics, and the fishermen all excited and getting ready to leave. For someone who love the sport is one of the best moments of the day.
